About
Balea Lac sits at 2,034 meters beside a glacial lake in Romania's Fagaras Mountains, reached in winter only by cable car once the Transfagarasan road closes. The car climbs 840 meters over 3.7 km from Balea Cascada, and the resort's main run drops 500 meters over 1,400 meters of piste, terrain rated for advanced skiers and off-piste riders. The area has never fully shaken the memory of an April 1977 avalanche that killed 23 people, the deadliest in Romanian history.
