At Studio Drive in San Luis Obispo, the waves rise like promises, breaking left and right over a sandy bottom with rock. The barrels form best when the north swells roll in at 2 to 3 meters, coaxed by winds from the west. Surf is rideable at all tides, but the magic lies in the rising and falling waters, when the beach break reveals its true character. Here, the crowd is often thin, but beware the rips and rocks that dwell beneath the surface.
