The Nidecker Rift is a mid-flex snowboard boot with dual BOA dials and a snug, performance-minded fit. It aims at riders who want more support than a soft park boot without the rigid feel of a race-ready stiff boot. Out of the box it feels well built and quickly settles in.
Fit and break-in
The Rift fits close. Most riders feel pressure at the toe pack on the first day, and that fades within a few hours as the liner compresses. A short wear-in at home helps. After that, owners describe a locked-in feel with little heel lift.
Sizing is the one place to slow down. Nidecker publishes a printable foot guide, and owners report it points to a half size up from their usual boot. Several say they would have been more comfortable had they followed it. The liner has a double velcro fit, a draw cord and the top dial, so riders with average feet find plenty of ways to dial in the shin. Riders with wide feet report the boot is tight, and one owner who moulded the liner found a size larger than his sneaker size fit very well.
On snow
The flex is medium. It gives enough forgiveness to flex into a butter or a landing, and enough backbone to drive an edge on groomers. Lateral support holds up when carving, and the boot does not fold under a stiffer board and binding. It suits all-mountain riding: groomers, side hits, trees and the odd park lap.
Closure
The dual BOA setup lets you tighten the lower and upper boot separately. You can ease off the cuff on a lift ride and cinch it before a run. Owners rate it highly. Because the liner is also adjustable, some riders find they loosen the system as the day goes on.
Who it suits
Intermediate to advanced riders who want a medium flex all-mountain boot and a snug fit. It is a poor pick for wide feet unless you size up and mould the liner. It is not the softest boot in the line-up, and it is not a stiff freeride boot.
Verdict
The Rift breaks in fast, holds the foot well and gives good board feel. Check the Nidecker size guide before you order, and expect a snug fit. For the right foot, it is an easy boot to like.
