The Proto Synthesis is Never Summer's freestyle-leaning all-mountain twin. Owners call it fast, damp, durable and good on ice. It gives up some pop and feels a little loose, and the Amazon listing is the 2025 women's model.

Never Summer builds its boards in Denver, and the Proto line is its best-known family. The Proto Synthesis is the freestyle-leaning, all-mountain member of that family. The board on Amazon is the 2025 women's version.

This review covers how the Proto Synthesis rides, where it falls short and who should buy it. Most Reddit owner reports cover the board in general or the men's version, so I note where that matters.

What It Is: A Rocker-Camber Twin

The Proto Synthesis is a true twin. The nose and tail match, and the stance is centered. The profile is Never Summer's rocker-camber hybrid: rocker between the feet, with camber toward the tip and tail. Rocker makes a board easier to turn and less catchy. The camber sections add edge hold and stability.

The core is wood. Never Summer is known for building heavy, damp and durable boards, and owners say the Proto Synthesis fits that description.

Never Summer's website no longer shows a product page for the women's Proto Synthesis, so it may be discontinued. Amazon still sells the 2025 model.

On the Snow: Fast, Damp and Forgiving

Owners describe the Proto Synthesis as fast and fun. One owner called it their favorite board for fun bombing fast: not too serious or demanding, but it loves to go fast. They also praised its excellent edge hold.

Another owner called it their favorite tree board. They said it turns quickly and is forgiving enough that they rarely catch an edge in grippy, shaded snow. They added that it handles moguls well thanks to its quick turns and medium flex.

A third owner called it freestyle-leaning but all-mountain capable. They said it feels a little loose, closer to a rocker board than camber, but is damp, very durable and grips well on ice.

Where It Excels

The Proto Synthesis shines for riders who want one fun board for groomers, trees and some park. Riders who ride icy hardpack will like the edge hold, and riders who like to go fast will like the damp, stable feel.

One owner, somewhere between beginner and intermediate, called it the best ride they'd had. They found it surfy and easy to control, and called it a speed beast on hardpack.

Where It Falls Short

The Proto Synthesis gives up some pop. The tree-riding owner said it noticeably gives up pop and isn't ideal for landing big airs. A beginner learning to ollie said they couldn't flex the board, though another rider said the problem was more likely technique.

It is also heavier than many boards. One rider said Never Summer boards are heavy and damp, which is why they stopped riding them and moved to CAPiTA, Ride and K2.

Powder reports are mixed. One owner said it did fine in deep powder. Another said it is not a powder board and struggles there.

And at full price it is expensive. One owner said many riders call the Proto overpriced at retail, but they found it a steal on sale.

The "Loose or Playful?" Debate

You'll find two views of the rocker-camber feel. Riders who like it say it makes the board forgiving and quick in trees and moguls. Riders who don't like it say it feels loose next to a camber board. Here's the take from owners: if you value forgiveness and speed, the Proto Synthesis feels playful. If you want a locked-in carve, look at a camber board.

Pro tip: Look for end-of-season sales. One owner found a Proto for $475, and Never Summer boards tend to last many seasons.

Who Should Buy It

Buy the Proto Synthesis Women's if you are an intermediate or advanced rider who wants a fast, durable all-mountain twin for groomers, trees and some park. It suits riders on icy hills who want reliable edge hold.

Look elsewhere if you want lots of pop for jumps, a light board or a powder board.

Verdict

The Never Summer Proto Synthesis Women's is a fast, damp, durable all-mountain twin that grips well on ice. It gives up some pop and feels a little loose next to camber, and it is heavy. If you can find it on sale and you value durability and speed, it is a board that will last you many seasons.
